What is the difference between CBD and THC?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, it is one of about 85 compounds found naturally in the plants of the cannabis family. Cannabis is the Latin name for both Marijuana (used recreationally) and industrial Hemp (used in paper, textile and bio-fuel production). Quite often, CBD is confused with THC. In fact, they are different compounds with different characteristics. THC, is a psychoactive component of marijuana, which gives users the “high” while CBD is a non-psychoactive component.

CBD is perfectly legal and has the opposite effects to THC. However, CBD still finds itself shrouded in misconceptions. Since it is harvested from the Hemp or cannabis plant, people often associate it (wrongfully) to marijuana and its recreational or illicit use.

What is the difference between Hemp and Marijuana?

Scientifically speaking, industrial hemp and marijuana are the same plants sharing a species name of Cannabis Sativa. That is where the similarities end as they have a profoundly different genetic profile. Industrial Hemp always comes from a strain of Cannabis sativa. Marijuana on the other hand, can be from Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, or Cannabis ruderalis.

The fundamental difference is how industrial Hemp is bred in comparison to marijuana. In general, industrial Hemp is very fibrous, with long strong stalks, and almost no flowering buds. Marijuana strains of Cannabis sativa will be bushier, smaller and full of flowering buds.

Does CBD contain THC?

The legal definition of “industrial hemp,” means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis. In other words, the Hemp plant contains only tiny quantities of THC. At the cultivation stage, this is around 0.3%. When the flowers/leaves/stalks undergo processing, the oil/extract it yields is then filtered and purified. This reduces any THC content left to around 0.02%.

How does CBD interact with our body?

CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The system regulates the body’s homeostasis (state of balance). It has an impact on functions such as pain, mood, sleep, appetite, hormone regulation and immune system response.

The endocannabinoid system is one of the most important regulatory systems in the human body, but most people do very little to support the health of this system. Cannabinoids are neglected as a way to regulate the ECS system.
