Cannabis Species

When it comes to the Cannabis species, there is a distinct lack of education and awareness. In part, this may be due to the stigma associated with many Cannabis-derived products. You can forgive people for thinking that Cannabis is merely 1 plant. Actually, the Cannabis family consists of 3 plant species. These are sativa, indica and ruderalis. In this article, we will look at each of the plants and in what form they are commonly used. Whether it is the source of Cannabidiol (CBD oil) or the ingredient behind some recreational drugs, Cannabis has plenty to offer.

Hemp – Cannabis Sativa

Cannabis sativa leaves usually have five long, slender fingers. If you take CBD oil, you may be eager to know where this substance comes from. Cannabis sativa is the source of Cannabidiol. It also goes by the name of Hemp. Because of the connection to the cannabis family of plants, Hemp suffers from the general stigma. This means it is fighting a constant battle for acceptance. For instance, many Hemp-derived CBD oil products have no side effects. Yet, in some quarters, it seems there is an unwillingness to accept the health benefits this compound offers.

Marijuana – Cannabis Indica

Marijuana comes from the indica Cannabis species. This type of cannabis leaf has 7 to 9 broad fingers. Most recreational cannabis products will contain indica as a major ingredient. There is a major difference between this species of cannabis and other strains. This is down to the presence of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). While this compound delivers plenty of health benefits, it also has a downside. THC is what causes the ‘high’ in recreational drugs. For some, that is no issue. However, for others, who seek purely health improvements, it could be a deal-breaker.

Cannabis Ruderalis

This type of cannabis is the least common. It is found in central-eastern Europe and Russia. Ruderalis contains very low levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In addition, it also boasts high levels of Cannabidiol (CBD). For this reason, many people use this species to treat ailments. It has a reputation as a powerful natural remedy and is commonly used in folk medicine. It is regularly offered to those suffering from depression, anxiety and epilepsy. Plus, it is sometimes given as a cancer treatment.

Cannabis Species and Alternative Medicine

All 3 of the aforementioned types of Cannabis species all have one thing in common. To an extent, they all have powerful healing properties. Sativa is well-known for producing CBD oil via Hemp. In addition, ruderalis has plenty of fans among those who require high-CBD and low-THC content in their remedy. Then we come to indica. This form of cannabis offers significant levels of THC (which, for some conditions, is beneficial). Even so, Indica also brings something to the table when used for medicinal purposes.

Cannabis Species Family

Some folk wrongly assume that Cannabis is just the one plant. Take a closer look and it is clear, Cannabis has plenty of attributes. Without a doubt, this species caters for all manner of needs. Whether it is for the recreational use of indica, or the health benefits offered up by sativa and ruderalis. There is more to the humble Cannabis plant than many people think.
